Just some random DBS/JK info I thought I'd share with you guys.

1. I asked Chester if DBS will be touring US. "Personally, I'd love to! But it wouldn't be fair on the guys in Linkin Park"
2. Amit (thepoet), Lisa (immortalsoul), Laura (I don't think she's on LPL) and I got to listen to 2 Julien K songs that are planned to be on their second album. We also got chances to listen to Killing Fields - it's amazing
3. Ryan told me Everyone Knows is planned to be on the 2nd album
4. Elias was actually asked to be the drummer of the live Nine Inch Nails band. He declined as he was working with Julien K, despite NIN being one his all-time favourite bands
5. For the Hamburg show, there was talk of Chester joining The Delta Fiasco for one song. Due to stage setup, it become an impossibility

Edit:

6. In The Darkness was planned to be on the New Moon soundtrack. However, they wanted the song exclusively. Dead By Sunrise declined after this decision.

The European leg of the Dead By Sunrise tour is almost here, so we teamed up with Julien-K Germany and LP Italy to bring you this interview with Elias. We hope you guys enjoy it!

11. What difference, if any, is there between Julien-K and Dead By Sunrise fans?
I think there is not much of a difference. I want to believe that a true fan would support both.

12. Can we expect a live CD, DVD or even both from Julien-K or Dead By Sunrise in the future?
Julien-K released a couple of live bootlegs on the internet from our tour with Evanescence in the fall of 2007. I believe we captured something incredible. You got to see what our production was then and what we could do live as an electronic rock band. Julien-K is truly a different animal live. As just with any band you have to see us live to understand and appreciate the emotions we present on stage. Fortunately Evanescence allowed us to bring our whole production with us. Plus our crew really kicked ass and if it wasn’t for them, I don’t think we could do what we do live. As far as releasing live content for either band, I think YouTube does that for us already in many ways – haha.

13. Which Julien-K or Dead By Sunrise track are you most proud of having worked on?
I’m very proud of all the drumming on Dead By Sunrise tracks. I put all my heart and soul into making the drums sing. Plus creating the drum beats for Out of Ashes was a band collaboration effort. I think that was the most fun part in which everyone helped out in making the songs better. Drumming-wise, “Into You” is technically the one I am most proud of.

14. Is there a chance that you play some Julien-K songs during the Dead By Sunrise shows on the upcoming European tour, or can we even expect other live treats such as more covers or acoustic songs?
No Julien-K songs other than “Morning After.” The best part about our set, as most people already know, is you will get to hear almost all of Out of Ashes in its entirety. Plus the bonus songs that did not make the CD will be the icing on the cake.

Euro Re-Release of DTA on March 5!

As the official European re-release of Julien-K's debut album Death To Analog approaches, I thought it would be helpful to provide you guys with some updates:

The European re-release of Death To Analog will be released on March 5 via the German indie label Tiefdruck-Musik in a special digipak that also includes 3 bonus tracks: The previously unreleased (and highly anticipated) "Killing Fields," the song "Dreamland" (that had only been released as part of the "Kick The Bass" single in the USA), and the Brandon Belsky remix of "Maestro" (that had only been released as part of a special, US-only summer tour EP in 2008).

When Bennington announced that he'd be exploring music on his own, it seemed that Linkin Park might be dissolving, especially considering the famously drawn-out recording process that accompanied their most recent album, 2007's Minutes to Midnight. But he seems more excited about Linkin Park than ever.

Rumours abound that their next album will be more consistent than Minutes to Midnight, which was knitted together from 50 songs, and will be structured by a loose concept. He says that songwriting rules long held by the band are now disregarded and they are producing some of their most fluid material in their 10th year together.

Jimmy "The Rev" Found Dead 29/

The drummer of Avenged Sevenfold has passed away at the age of 28.

HUNTINGTON BEACH James Owen Sullivan, a drummer and backup vocalist for the Southern California band Avenged Sevenfold, was found dead at his home on Monday, authorities have confirmed.

Sullivan, who went by the stage name The Rev, appears to have died of natural causes, Huntington Beach police Lt. John Domingo said. Police were notified by firefighters who had responded to Sullivan's home about 1 p.m.

Sullivan was 28. The Orange County Coroner's Office is investigating the death.

Avenged Sevenfold formed in Huntington Beach in 1999. Sullivan was a member from the beginning.

Since then, the five-man group has put out four albums and won Best New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2006. The group's self-titled fourth album hit No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart in 2007. According to a message posted by Zacky Vengeance on the band's MySpace page, the group was hard a work on a fifth album.

By Monday evening, whispers about Sullivan's death had spread to the band's fan sites on the Internet, which quickly filled with messages of condolence.

Dead by Sunrise break away from Linkin Park and Orgy associations on their debut, Out of Ashes

Given the stratospheric success of Linkin Park and Orgy, it might seem odd that any project comprised of their members would distance itself from their platinum glow. But as it happens, Dead by Sunrise–comprised of Linkin Park vocalist Chester Bennington, Orgy/Julien-K guitarists Amir Derakh and Ryan Shuck, and Julien-K bassist, drummer and keyboardist Brandon Belsky, Elias Andra and Anthony "Fu" Valcic–and their debut album, Out of Ashes, actually arose from a need on everyone's part to do something different.

DBS unofficially began in 2005 when Bennington wrote a handful of songs outside of the Linkin Park mold. Convinced of their merit, Bennington turned them over to Derakh and Shuck–friends since Linkin Park and Orgy toured early in both their careers–to get their input.

"When we were doing Julien-K, Chester was real interested and kind of wanted to be a part of it, but it didn't really make sense for him to be in the band," says Derakh. "Chester had been playing these ideas to Ryan on an acoustic, and Ryan was like, 'These are really good songs. What are you going to do with them?'"

Bennington proposed that Shuck and Derakh flesh out his acoustic sketches into full-fledged songs. The pair recorded Bennington strumming the song "Let Down" and singing a scratch vocal, and then spent a couple of days building up the track to essentially the '80s synth pop/contemporary wall-of-rock version that appears on Out of Ashes. Bennington was floored.

"He was like, 'Wow, I could never have imagined this,'" says Derakh. "He was really stoked. So we did a few more songs and he kept getting more and more excited about it and was like, 'Let's keep working on it; it'll be like my solo project, and we'll work on it when we can work on it.'"

That summer, the trio assembled over half of the songs on Out of Ashes, but Bennington had to split to concentrate on making Minutes to Midnight with Linkin Park while Derakh and Shuck focused on Julien-K. Last year, they were finally able to revisit the material, to which the remaining members of Julien-K had also contributed. Almost organically, the combination of Bennington and Julien-K morphed into Dead by Sunrise.

"It wasn't so much that we were recording these songs for Chester; it became a band," says Derakh. "It all sort of fell together the end of last year, and for all the right reasons. This whole record was done completely on our own, void of any outside influences business-wise–just friends making music together that they really love. It spans many decades: There's punk elements, new wave elements, rock elements, grunge elements, classic rock elements, and they're all sort of mixed together."

The collective is committed to keeping Dead by Sunrise together for more than a single album/tour cycle. They've done some well-received gigs for Out of Ashes, and while they'll have to work around the inevitable upcoming Linkin Park and Julien-K activities–and a possible Orgy reunion–Dead by Sunrise are definitely a living thing.

Mike Shinoda Talks About New Album

With the recent release of the fan club-only rarities compilation LPU9: Demos and a Grammy nomination for best Hard Rock Performance for "What I've Done," from their live album, Road to Revolution: Live at Milton Keynes, the decade is drawing to a close nicely for Linkin Park.

Did Chester's going off and working with [solo project] Dead By Sunrise have any residual affect on how he's now contributing to Linkin Park?
That's a good question. I related to where Chester was at when he was making the Dead By Sunrise record. I went through the same thing with [Shinoda's side-project] Fort Minor. He had songs that he had to get out of his system; songs that the rest of the guys in Linkin Park couldn't necessarily get behind. Not because they wouldn't like them, but because they aren't right for a Linkin Park record. I think for both of us, working outside the band made us feel like we could focus better when we eventually came back.

Dead By Sunrise will be playing their next show tonight in Grand Prairie, Texas at the awesome Nokia Theater. It's a part of the KDGE "How The Edge Stole Xmas" Show and has some other really good bands on the lineup as well. DBS gets a 40 minute set...I wonder if they'll play the same stuff or maybe throw in a surprise like 'In The Darkness' or 'Into You'....?

Linkin Park's Chester Bennington expresses his dark side with Dead by Sunrise

Chester Bennington is a caring individual. He doesn't want you to kill yourself.

Despite that fact, the native Phoenician and Linkin Park front man is still going to promote this ultra-dark, lyrically emo but musically heavy side-project, Dead By Sunrise. Don't worry, though. He amped it up with hard rock influences with the help of members of the electronic band Julien-K and synth-rockers Orgy.

Bennington chatted with College Times so we wouldn't cry.

College Times: How did you hook up with the guys from Julien-K for Dead by Sunrise?
Bennington: Well, I've been friends with Ryan [Shuck] and Amir [Derakh] for about 10 years or so, maybe longer. Ryan was the best man at my wedding and we're close. We're really close friends. So when I had to pick somebody to work with on these songs, I thought 'well, I'm going to call Ryan and Amir.' They actually started Julien-K and in doing so, Brandon [Belsky] has been working with those guys as an assistant-slash-engineering assistant ... and they couldn't recruit him into their band. So we kind of turned him from a boy into a rock star. Fu [Anthony Valcic] is a producer and engineer from Canada that was recruited to work for a company we had started. He has worked with Ryan and Amir and in doing that I became friends with him. I became friends with Alias when the Hybrid [Linkin Park] tour started. We had just started touring for Linkin Park ... and I met him kind of haphazardly back then. It turns out that he is way fucking better at drums than he is [at synth]. Somehow, through the grapevine, he started blending into Ryan and Amir's camp and we've been great friends ever since.

Dead By Sunrise has a more grungy feel than Linkin Park, and at times it sounds a little punk. I don't really hear that with Linkin Park, Julien-K or Orgy. Is that a sound you wanted to achieve or was it just something you fell into?
These are the songs I write. You know, I've always been into those genres of music my whole life. I primarily listen to punk music, grunge music or pop-alternative stuff like Depeche Mode and The Cure. Those are my things. So, when you grow up listening to the blues you're probably going to write bluesy songs. That's the same case for me here.

How is the songwriting experience different with Dead By Sunrise than it is with Linkin Park?
Really, the process of it is very similar. The main difference is that these are my songs and I'm involved in every aspect of making this record.

The band is playing upcoming dates, but are there any plans in the works for a full-on tour?
We're working on it.

Oh really? Will it be nationwide?
I would like to think so. I mean, I'm working on a new Linkin Park record, so it's not like I can be like 'oh, I have eight months to 12 months to tour this record.' It's like, 'okay, I'm making a record for Linkin Park.' I need to balance playing shows for Dead By Sunrise as well as being in the studio with Linkin Park, which is the priority. It's difficult for me to say that because they're both really important to me. We're figuring that out. It's the biggest hurdle facing us right now, to manage to build Dead by Sunrise around Linkin Park.

Was Dead By Sunrise's name originally "Snow White Tan." Why did you change it?
I loved the name. When we started working on the songs, I was really writing more ... of these mid-tempo, melodically driven songs like "Too Late" or "Walking in Circles," "In the Darkness," "Give Me Your Name," so we really had to pump up the rock a little bit. Otherwise I would have literally an album full of songs in that vein, which wouldn't be bad, but I don't want people to kill themselves to this record. I want people to play the album and rock out and have an emotionally dynamic experience. So, you know, um ... I totally just lost train of thought. I got a little distracted. My super hot wife just walked in front of me and I completely lost it.

Fair enough; why did you change the name?
Oh, yeah. So, at the time we weren't going out into the day and doing a lot of work until 4 o'clock in the morning, so it fit. Given that kind of dark nature to a lot of the songs and given that it just summarizes the overall musical feel of the band, it felt like, as time went on it got a little darker and heavier and meaner, so to speak. The name felt a little [less fitting], so we decided to change it to something that fit.

Linkin Park and Dead By Sunrise mainman Chester Bennington gave "Good Times, Bad Times" a serious gusto that even Robert Plant couldn't conjure. Chester's got a classic old school rock n' roll edge and a modern sensitivity that makes him a true star. He's got one foot planted in tradition, but he's also the most forward thinking singer on the scene. He proved that during "Slither" and a raucous "Paradise City" complete with Stephen Adler behind the kit and Duff McKagan on bass. Chester definitely stood proudly even alongside Perry Farrell who did phenomenal renditions of "Mountain Song," "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Jane Says."

Chester Interview and Meeting with PETA

Chester Bennington contributes his stellar vocals to bands Linkin Park and Dead By Sunrise, and now Chester is using his pipes to speak up for animals. In his ad for PETA, Chester bares his skin to help animals keep theirs and encourages his fans to choose "Ink, Not Mink."

As a big animal-lover and supporter of animal rights, Chester is speaking out against fur because of the inherent cruelty of the fur industry. Says Chester, "Electrocuting animals, skinning them while they're alive—these are acts of inhumanity." He explains, "Because it's out of sight, it's usually out of mind for most people, and we need to show our respect for all creatures of this world."

In addition to boycotting fur, Chester also promotes adopting homeless animals rather than buying animals from pet stores and encourages his fans to always spay and neuter their dogs and cats—all great ways to help animals.

Chester Bennington Strips Down for new 'Ink Not Mink' PETA Ad

Chester isn't shy about exposing the cruelty of the fur industry—or his body. He has teamed up with PETA for a brand-new "Ink, Not Mink" ad campaign in which he shows off his tattooed physique above the tagline "Be Comfortable in Your Own Skin, and Let Animals Keep Theirs."

Bennington—whose debut album with Dead by Sunrise, Out of Ashes, launched this fall—also sat down for an exclusive PETA interview in which he discussed the fur industry. "What's really important … for people to understand is the cruelty behind the fur industry," he said. "Electrocuting animals, skinning them while they're alive—these are … acts of inhumanity." Bennington continued, "Because it's out of sight, it's usually out of mind for most people, and we need to show our respect … for all creatures of this world."

Bennington, a co-owner of Club Tattoo (a chain of tattoo shops that opened its newest location in Las Vegas earlier this year), joins a growing list of celebrities—including Tommy Lee, Steve-O, and Carey Hart—who have starred in PETA's "Ink, Not Mink" anti-fur ads.

Linkin Park singer 'wanted to kill himself'

Alcoholism and the break-up of his marriage led Chester Bennington to consider suicide.

Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington has revealed that he considered suicide after the break-up of his first marriage.

The singer, whose band's hits include Crawling and Numb, told Kerrang that he battled with alcoholism when his nine-year marriage came to an end in 2005.

Saying leaving his wife was "the easy part", Bennington said that he found it difficult to watch his ex-wife receive the money which he had worked hard to make over the years.

The frontman explained that he felt as though his life's work was being given away and started to drink so much that he could not live his normal life or leave his home.

"I wanted to kill myself. I could very easily not be the person who's sitting here right now. I could be dead. It was a horrible, horrible existence," he told the magazine.

Bennington also revealed that he has been drink-free for more than four years after attending rehab for his problem.

Recently, former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl told BBC Radio 1 that he always believed grunge icon Kurt Cobain would die young.

Chester's Interview with INKED Magazine

There’s a strip mall in Tempe, AZ, the desert suburb just outside of Phoenix. Actually, there are a lot of strip malls. But this particular strip mall is home to the original Club Tattoo, a shop opened in 1995. When Linkin Park and Dead by Sunrise vocalist Chester Bennington enters the shop on a bright, blazing hot August afternoon, he seems infinitely less intense offstage than he does when his voice is barreling into the microphone. He is dressed in blue jeans, camouflaged slip-on sneakers, and a white T-shirt that shows off his tattoos. The 33-year-old singer seems at home in the shop, and he should be. This is where Bennington got his first tattoo, 15 years ago, long before Linkin Park. Now, 45 million albums later, he and longtime friends Sean and Thora Dowdell own this shop and four others throughout the States, including a swank new location at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.

Parked in the back office, Bennington points to the large koi fish on his left biceps. “This was my first when I was 18. There was a girl named Jodi [Wendt] who I thought was super fucking hot who worked here. I wanted her to give me my first tattoo so she would be forced to lean over me for five hours. I wanted a Pisces symbol, and it turned out to be this thing with these weird fish and these stupid faces. But it’s my first tattoo and it has sentimental meaning.”

Despite the ear-shattering guitars and guttural screams, Bennington can be sentimental. Just not for Arizona. The singer grew up on the west side of Phoenix, in an area he describes as “just suburbia.” But he wasn’t happy. “I hated being in Arizona growing up. Between the abuse as a kid [at the hands of an older male “friend”] and my parents getting divorced and getting into drugs, there were—with the exception of music—no real good memories here. I couldn’t wait to get out.”

A tour of the area where Bennington grew up is about what you would expect from a future rock star. He spent his days manning the grill at the local Burger King, skateboarding with friends, and fronting his first band—the grunge rock group Grey Daze—alongside Sean Dowdell. He also did a lot of drugs. At the time, Bennington was addicted to crystal meth, among other things.

“Cocaine was never really my favorite. I’ve done a lot of it [laughs] but it wasn’t my drug of choice. I’d be like, ‘Oh, okay, you have coke. I guess I’ll do that. Anything else? No? All right, then.’ Cocaine’s high wasn’t really the best. … I love to do things that make you feel really good, like ecstasy and acid and mushrooms. But you can’t do those every day because they don’t work every day. Things that do are alcohol, marijuana, and speed. Those usually work all the time.”

By the time he was 18, Bennington had overcome his addiction to crystal meth and other hard drugs by quenching that thirst with alcohol and pot. He met his first wife, Samantha Olit, while working at the fast food chain. The two were married on Halloween 1996 when Bennington was just 20, and because money was tight he had his wedding band tattooed onto his ring finger. In 1999, the singer auditioned and was accepted into Linkin Park as their second vocalist. He relocated his wife and their first child to southern California and didn’t look back. Linkin Park’s debut album, Hybrid Theory, was released in 2000 to explosive success and by 2001 had already sold nearly 5 million copies. Bennington appeared antidrug during this time, denouncing drug use in interviews and singing “Breaking the Habit,” a song Linkin Park’s other vocalist, Mike Shinoda, wrote for the band.

I was randomly visiting the Warner Music Germany site and saw that a box set version of Out Of Ashes is about to be released on November 20th in Germany.
The website gives away no further info about the content of this boxed set, neither does any other site as of now.
It sounds pretty promising but what could it be? A box with a DVD, or an extra CD with the acoustic tracks, or a t-shirt?

Live Review: Dead By Sunrise — The Roxy, Los Angeles

There are rock stars, and then there's Chester Bennington.

He's not so much a rock star, as he is an artist born to bleed on stage. Bennington has captivated millions as the voice for Linkin Park, but those numbers will only grow with his new project, Dead By Sunrise. At the band's first official Los Angeles show at The Roxy last night, Bennington exuded a primal energy that burned fiercely during each and every note. From the second Dead By Sunrise stormed the stage, he took a hold of the audience and didn't let go until the finals strains of feedback filtered out of the club and into the bustling Sunset Strip.

Dead By Sunrise tore through an unforgettable set of material from their debut, Out of Ashes. Chester got up in fans' faces screaming each and every word with conviction and chaotic control. First single, "Crawl Back In," segued from a grimy gutter rock riff into an entrancing chorus. Bennington stalked the corners of the stage with a classic swagger and style. If Scott Weiland had a successor, it'd be Bennington. With his Mohawk perfectly poised and a chic designer jacket, he's got the requisite rock star style, but he's edgier than most, verbally bleeding over each somber riff. That was all only on "Crawl Back In" too.

"Condemned" gave Ryan Shuck and Amir Derakh the space to cut through gnashing choruses with a direct distortion assault. Their grungey and guttural playing perfectly contrasts with Bennington's croon. Before "Fire," Chester let out a big smile, "Welcome to our very first show in Los Angeles! What a fuckin' beautiful moment to share." "Fuckin' beautiful" is the only way to adequately describe the ethereal echo pulsating through "Fire." It shows just how diverse Dead By Sunrise can get, and it also sparked a big sing-a-long.

After the crowd response to fire, Bennington laughed, "You guys should all Twitter me your names so I can give you tickets the next time Dead By Sunrise plays." Cheers erupted, and he smirked, "I'm a fuckin' giver."

He kept giving on a Depeche Mode-esque "Let Down" and the highly melodic "Too Late." Bennington lets al of his influences breathe through this slower fare, and band masterfully cultivates these airy soundscapes for his voice to soar over.

Everything ended with an explosion though. Dead By Sunrise rocketed right through a jarring "My Suffering," while "Inside of Me" simply roared. There was a punk rock energy and a classic rock bombast that made the show special. Dead By Sunrise concluded with a raucous cover of The Misfits' "20 Eyes." They infused the song with a futuristic grit that made the classic sound even deadlier.

As long as Chester continues giving, rock n' roll can't die…

OOA jumped in Germany onto position 5 at the album top 50 and at the digital charts at position 2. great job, but you don't need to sell so many records at germany you need normally less than 1000 to get into the top 10 of the album charts.

REVOLVER The hiatus in 2005 was the first time Linkin Park has taken a break in 10 years…
CHESTER BENNINGTON Meteora and Hybrid Theory both had 24-month touring cycles, so we were on the road for a really long time. We weren’t really happy with how Warner Bros. had treated us at that point. It was a pretty frustrating time. It was like, “Here we are, we sold 20 million albums” and they’re still telling us, “You’re a fluke.” We sold 10 million records, how much do we have to prove?

In the print interview, you talk about your divorce. Is this when you started losing your shit?
I just completely lost my mind. Over the course of the next 12 to 18 months, I was just a trainwreck.

Did it start on one day or was a crescendo?
The day it started was the day I knew I was gonna move out.

In our interview you talk about partying hard. What do you mean by that?
It could have meant going to a strip club and having a few drinks. It could have meant staying at home and watching the waves break and drinking Jack and Cokes all day. Or it could have turned into a four- or five-day drug-and-alcohol binge, pushing yourself to the limits of your mind. I think the one common denominator in all that stuff is no matter what I was doing, there was always alcohol…and there was a lot of it. I would sit there with my guitar all day and write songs and get drunk. And when you’re drunk, if somebody said, “Hey let’s go do this particular drug, or that particular drug, or a combination of all of them,” you’re like, “OK.”

And in the middle of this you had to go play Live 8? What was that like?
Live 8 felt like this thing that was way bigger than me. It was important and getting a message out. But at the same time my brain was firing all kinds of electrical signals into the wrong places. Another thing I had to do because it was important and bigger than me [was a Music for Relief show]… I had no idea what my money situation was like. I was living in this little apartment. And it was like, “Hey, we need you to go to Thailand to go for Music For Relief to talk about all the stuff that’s going on over there with the tsunamis.” You guys can’t think of a-fuckin’-nother person that might be better suited for this right now? I don’t have any fucking clothes! All my stuff’s at my ex-wife’s house! She’s not letting me in! You want me to go? I don’t have a couch! … Life doesn’t fucking stop going because you decided you’re having a bad day—or a bad year.

What happened?
Unless you’ve had it happen to you, it’s kind of difficult to grasp. They started prescribing me Klonopin for anxiety. Taking that and drinking as much as I was drinking, it’s a combination of the two things that will kill you if you stop doing them suddenly.

My left arm would start to bounce, and then my head would start to twitch. I was embarrassed by it. There was only a few people who had seen me like that. Talinda [Bentley, Bennington’s current wife] would have to come in and comfort me and talk me out of it, and I would have to get something to drink to bring myself down. It was crazy. I got hospitalized a couple times. Finally I sat down with her and a couple of my friends in Dead by Sunrise and said, “I need to go into treatment.” On the way to treatment the night before, I was like, “Let’s get fucking hammered! This is my last time.” No one else got hammered with me. They just sat in a room and watched me. It was pretty pathetic. Went into treatment, was there for 30 days, got out. Three weeks later I was drinking again. I drank more. That was when my wife pretty much had a complete nervous breakdown over it, called everybody in Linkin Park. Couple hours later they were all at my house. Told me how much they loved me. I got on the plane and went back to treatment again.

It was a real intervention?
Yeah! I was sitting there going, Fuck… If I had just not picked up that first drink again. Went back to treatment. Came out in a much better place. Stayed sober for about a year. Relapsed. Went right back into hitting the program hard. Seven months later relapsed. That’s been the case for me.

You had demoed much of the Dead by Sunrise album in 2005. But when you re-recorded the vocals in 2008, were any of the songs hard to record?
“Let Down,” for example. That was in the middle of the divorce and that’s what that song was about. When I wrote the demo, it was really fucking good. That was harder to redo in the studio when I’m happily married and got a lot of success and I’ve got stuff again. It was hard for me to go back to that place because I didn’t feel that way; I didn’t feel that desperation. It was harder for me to do the final recording for that song because it was hard for me to tap into those emotions.

When you listen to the record now, do you feel like a different person?
I know I talk a lot about it, but the reality is, I came out on the other side. I made a great record with Linkin Park, made a good record with Dead by Sunrise. I’m good dad, I’m a good husband, I have a lot of friends. The bad thing would had been if I had died or continued to do that to myself. And ended up somewhere in the shithole. The good story is that didn’t happen. I get to keep making music.

What was the song selection process like? For instance, ‘Morning After,’ which is also a great song isn’t not on the record?

That was done, because I already released ‘Morning After’ on the Underworld soundtrack. I felt that if I put that on the record, it would kind of be cheating. So we basically took some songs that didn’t quite make the cut, and we’re reissuing, because the version that is on Underworld II is kind of a remix, it has some guitars taken out, and a more danceable beat to kind of fit the mode of the soundtrack a little more. This is more of a direct, straight rock version, and I believe that is actually going to be on the record if you get it as an import from Japan or some parts of Europe. So if people want that on the Dead By Sunrise record, [there’s] that, and we did a cover of the Misfits’ ‘20 Eyes’ like as extras.

Why that song in particular?

Well, I actually started playing that song when I was in a cover band called Bucket of Weenies for a little while. I play it with Bucket of Weenies and Camp Freddy sometimes, it’s just fun to go play with a bunch of guys and play cover songs. So we started playing ‘20 Eyes,’ we recorded it and we really liked it. There’s nothing we’ll ever be able to do with it, so we thought that this was kind of good way of letting people have it.

Getting to the actual songs on the record, ‘Fire’ sounds like an open letter to someone who has passed.

That song took a few different lyrical changes. It started out one way that was really like a sad story using interesting metaphors and that’s where the name ‘Fire’ came from. The lyric that inspired the title was, ‘There’s a fire in our hearts that’s the reason why the tears keep falling, to put out the fires that our hearts are starting.’ That’s where it came from, [but] the melodies didn’t quite seem to fit. So I started over, and kind of just ran with that, and went with a more spiritual path of getting through the tougher times.
